An image or composition does not necessarily need an object or protagonist to be in the spotlight. An image can have no foreground or no background, meaning that all object in the image are in the same level of importance. This is the depiction of all entities being treated equally and possessing the same hierarchical position. In the photography of Andreas Gursky, “99 Cent”, all objects and parts within the 99 cent store interior have the same hierarchy. Although one can tell, which parts are closer to the camera, it is not possible to define a background of it, even the architectural part of the composition is blending in and not being a definite background. The busyness of the picture does not allow a clear definition of entities.
